BREAKING: Child dies from flu virus in Ohio County, WV

OHIO COUNTY (WCHS ) BY Crissy Clutter – A young child has died from the flu virus in Ohio County. Ohio County Health Department administrator Howard Gamble confirms they were informed of a pediatric death Monday.

Gamble said the West Virginia State Health Department has also been informed.

The child was a student at Ritchie Elementary School. Gamble is warning the public to seek medical help immediately when dealing with the flu.

He also said people need to get their flu shots now. No further information has been released at this time.

Ritchie Elementary School staff members were made aware of the student’s passing. Grief counselors are available at the school if they are needed by students.

Ohio County Schools Superintendent Kimberly Miller said her thoughts and prayers go out to the student and the student’s family.

“The passing of a child is the most difficult of losses, but that is what is being dealt with today at Ritchie Elementary School,” Miller said. “The excellent staff at Ritchie is prepared and committed to providing the appropriate counseling and support to students who may need it following this deeply saddening news. Our condolences go out to the student, the student’s family, friends and loved ones and the entire Ritchie Elementary School community.”
