WOAY – Bluefield senior running back Mookie Collier was named the 2017 Kennedy Award winner, as voted on by the West Virginia Sportswriters Association.
He is the second Bluefield player to win the award, following Will Cole in 2008.
Collier and the Beavers entered 2017 eager to show improvement from a 2016 campaign that finished 4-6. They were able to complete a perfect regular season, winning the 10 games by an average score of 47-10. That was followed by wins against Braxton County, Point Pleasant, Bridgeport, and a come-from-behind 26-21 win against Fairmont Senior in the Class AA championship game.
Collier finished the year with 2,235 rushing yards and 39 touchdowns. He was named the offensive captain for the Class AA All-State First Team, and was named WOAY’s 2017 Football Player of the Year.
He will receive the Kennedy Award next May in Charleston.
