Wheeling, WV (WOAY) – For the 11th time overall, and the first time since 2009, Bluefield High School will celebrate a football state title.
The Beavers rallied in the second half to beat Fairmont Senior 29-26 on Friday night at Wheeling Island Stadium to kick off Super Six weekend. The Polar Bears finish runners-up for a second straight year.
Fairmont Senior drove downfield on the first drive to open the scoring, but the Beavers answered with touchdowns on each of their first three possessions. The Polar Bears did rally with a touchdown late in the second quarter to take a 26-21 lead at halftime.
The lead was nearly extended in the third quarter, but a Truck Edwards fumble recovery in the end zone set up a go-ahead drive, finished by a Chandler Cooper touchdown run. The Polar Bears would have two drives late to retake the lead, but the Beavers defense made plays to preserve their unbeaten season.
Hear from quarterback Chandler Cooper, running back Mookie Collier, and head coach Fred Simon after the game.
