FAYETTEVILLE, WV (BY: JOHN MCCOY, CHARLESTON GAZETTE-MAIL) — Even for guides who shepherd kayakers of all skill levels down West Virginia’s New River, working with a blind kayaker was something different.
Caleb Adams and Peyton Love recently accompanied such a kayaker, Lonnie Bedwell, on two trips through the biggest, toughest rapids the river has to offer. To say that Bedwell impressed them would be an understatement.
“I thought he was just amazing,” said Love. “Once he got used to the river, he aced it.”
Both Love and Adams knew of Bedwell because they’d seen him in action before. Love had seen YouTube videos of Bedwell running the Grand Canyon section of the Colorado River. Adams had seen Bedwell running the Upper Gauley River.
