Bikers Travel Over 500 Miles To Honor Local Fallen Heroes

BECKLEY, WV (WOAY) – Traveling over 500 miles to the mountain state, officers from all over the country came together in Beckley to honor the lives of three former Beckley Police Officers.

Patrolman Dale, Detective Smith and Sergeant Lily each of them passed away while on the job from gunfire. The late family members of the fallen heroes were in admiration of the long journey the bikers made.

The mother of Detective Smith, Susie Smith said, “It’s great you know that people still think about you and still love the family member you lost and it didn’t just happen then they were forgotten because they’ll never be forgotten.”

During the memorial officers took time to give their condolences to the families while remembering their former friends and colleagues.

Each year the Law Enforcement United bike riders start their journey in St. Louis and head to six other states until they reach Washington D.C. Stopping at numerous locations to pay their respects because they simply, don’t want people to forget.

Broward County, Florida Officer, Peter Geary said, “People tend to forget. He continued, This doesn’t let you forget this gives a chance to the community to come together and realize the sacrifices and stuff and the fact that this is a real concern, this happens all the time.”

Law Enforcement United not only holds memorials for fallen officers but they also offer assistance to the widows and children

Though the officers aren’t finished on their journey yet they’ve already started making plans on when their coming back to Southern WV.
