Beekeeping class proposed in Raleigh County

BECKLEY, WV (AP) – Officials are proposing a beekeeping course for students in Raleigh County.

The Register-Herald reports that under a partnership between the Raleigh County Beekeepers’ Association and Raleigh County Schools the class would be offered through the Academy of Careers and Technologies at a local farm.

Mark Lilly, president of the Raleigh County Beekeeper’s Association, said bees are important for food production.

The association would provide the beginning course for beekeeping free of charge, as well as instruction at facility. One goal is to meet the need in the state for cultivation of honeybee populations.

Lilly said if it moves forward, it would be the first program of its kind in the state.
