Beckley VAMC recognized with 4-star hospital quality rating

Every day Beckley VA Medical Center delivers top-notch care to our veterans… and the hospital is recognized for it with a four-star CMS quality rating, from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services — the first time it has included VA facilities in these annual ratings.

“We are here every day for our veterans. Thirty-five percent of our employees are veterans themselves… so our heart is in the mission and we’re proud of our four-star rating from CMS,” said Sara Yoke, Beckley VAMC public affairs officer.

According to Yoke, CMS uses five categories — mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience, and timely and effective care as a way to measure a quality rating for each hospital.

“We are a full-capacity hospital; we have a surgical floor, we have an emergency room, we have outpatient care, mental healthcare, several different modalities of specialty care, we also have a dental clinic, audiology, radiology, a lab,” the public affairs officer said.

Sixty-seven percent of VA hospitals included in the study received four or five stars, compared to only 41 percent of non-va hospitals.

“This really shows the effectiveness of VA healthcare amongst private care.”
The VA’s goal is to always provide the ultimate care for all veterans who come to their facility.

“We care for veterans from all different eras across southern West Virginia and 11 counties.”

The Beckley VA Medical Center has been a southern West Virginia staple since 1951… serving the healthcare needs of more than 38,000 veterans who served and sacrificed for our country.

“It’s a yearlong evaluation based on those five categories,” said Yoke. “It takes our entire medical center team to work together to be able to achieve something like that.”
