UPDATE: Lt. David Allard of the Beckley Police Department announces that Darius Cook of Beckley was taken into custody following a traffic stop and foot pursuit in Beaver, WV. The Beckley Police Department was assisted by members of the WV State Police, Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office and US Marshal Service.
Cook will be taken before a Raleigh County Magistrate for arraignment after he is processed at the Beckley Police Department.
BECKLEY, WV (WOAY) – Beckley Police need your help locating a man wanted after he struck a police officer and fled, causing significant injuries to the officer.
On July 28th, 2020 at 10:40 pm, Cpl Neal Smith of the Beckley Police Department was conducting patrol operations in the area of Nebraska Avenue at the intersection of Sour Street. Cpl. Smith observed what he believed to be a hand to hand drug transaction between two parties; a black male wearing an ATV helmet and another individual in a dark-colored passenger car. Cpl. Smith stopped at the intersection, where he exited his vehicle to confront them.
Upon approach, the black male immediately started his All-terrain Vehicle (ATV). Cpl. Smith attempted to physically restrain him, but the male rapidly accelerated the ATV. Cpl. Smith was struck by the fleeing vehicle, causing significant injury to his lower extremities. The driver of the ATV continued to flee the area but wrecked a short time later on Rails to Trails. The driver of the passenger car also fled the scene, making no attempt to render aid to Cpl. Smith. Cpl. Smith was transported by EMS to Raleigh General Hospital where he was treated and later released; the extent of his injuries remains unknown pending further evaluation.
The Beckley Police Department is asking for the public’s assistance in locating thirty-year-old, Darrius Jamal Cook of Sour Street in Beckley, West Virginia wanted for Malicious Assault on a Police Officer, Fleeing from an officer resulting in injury, and fleeing an officer in connection with this incident.
