Beckley Police Department Engages Local Children

BECKLEY– The Beckley Police Department’s first Junior Police and Leadership Academy is now in the books.

The beckley Police Department held it first Junior Police Academy this week. Twenty-eight middle school students from the Raleigh County school district got a chance to experience life-like crimes. Students were able to gain an understanding of the day to day responsibilities and duties that officers are tasked with on a regular basis.

Lt. Charles Ragland with the Beckley Police Department says, most kids don’t have a chance to interact with law-enforcement in their duties.

‘They wanted to learn so we did a little bit of everything from K9, drugs, DUI’s, crime scene. We’ve done everything with these guys and they really eat it up.”

The Beckley Police Department is trying to make this a yearly event for the children of Raleigh County.
