Beckley Man Arrested For Firing Shots On The Rails To Trails

BECKLEY, WV (WOAY) – A Beckley man was arrested after firing shots on the Rails To Trails.

According to a criminal complaint, police were dispatched to shots fired call on Sunday, September 23, 2018, at around 1:30 pm.  The man was identified as Duane Grimes.  When police told Grimes to stop, he placed his hands in the front pocket of his hooded sweatshirt and did not stop.   Once police yelled, “Stop, police K9”, Grimes stopped and faced him.  Police asked him if he a gun and he said, no.  Police found a loaded semiautomatic pistol on his right side.

Grimes stated that he hadn’t fired a gun and was meeting his sister to play “Pokemon”.

After further investigation, the victim asked Grimes for a cigarette, which Grimes perceived it as a threat.  He then ordered the victim to lay down and Grimes displayed his pistol.  Grimes then told the victim he was not playing, and he had better run away.  Grimes then fired at least two shots up.  Grimes admitted that he made a mistake and that he should not have fired the rounds, as they endangered the safety of residents.

Grimes was charged with wanton endangerment and is currently out on bond.
