Beckley Man Admits To Setting House On Fire With Two Children Under 5 Years Old Inside

BECKLEY, WV (WOAY) – One man is in jail after setting a house on fire with a two young children inside the home because he “had enough” of his ex-wife.

According to court documents, Raymond Clarence Peppers, went to a house on C street in Beckley and set it purposely on fire.  When police arrived the witnesses gave a description of a man who had jumped the fence and took running towards Maplewood Lane.

When Police found Peppers, he said in an exited utterance that he “had enough” and started “the fire.”  Peppers continued to tell police that he had enough of his ex-wife and step-daughter always ragging on him and wanted to prove a point.  Peppers said he took a gasoline jug in the basement and started pouring it all over.  He then poured a trail out the door and ignited it.  The fire blew back on him setting his face and clothing on fire. He then got the flames burned out on himself and fled.

Peppers admitted that he knew several people were inside when he ignited it on fire; including, a two small children under 5 years old.

Peppers is charged with first degree arson, child neglect with risk of injury, and attempted first degree murder. He is being held in the Southern Regional Jail under an 80,000 dollar bond.
