Beckley City Council approves first reading to waiver B&O tax for new sheriff office

BECKLEY, WV (WOAY) – Tuesday night, the Beckley City Council approved the first reading for an ordinance to waive the city’s business and occupation (B&O) tax for the new Sheriff’s office.

The tax would be waived for the builders and contractors working to build the new sheriff’s office at Pinecrest Park. The first reading was approved with a 5-2 vote and will now have a second reading and public hearing on the ordinance.

“This is the matter that Sheriff Van Meter came to council with earlier and has requested that the city waive its B&O taxes on the contractors and builders of the new Raleigh County Sheriff’s office that is to be constructed at Pinecrest Park as the mayor stated,” said Beckley City Attorney William File.

The second reading and public hearing will occur at the next city council meeting.
