BECKLEY–August Activities Planned in Downtown Beckley

Fridays in the Park: Free concerts are held weekly during the summer at Word Park on Neville Street from 11:30 am until 1:00 p.m., weather permitting. The August entertainment line-up at the gazebo begins with the Chris Oxley Quartet on August 4, followed by Tender Mercies and Bill Campbell on August 11, and Lady D on August 18. Then on August 25, Friday in the Park celebrates the Appalachian Festival with music by Lost Cannon Bluegrass Band and Shane Ingram and Friends. Lunch vendors sell food items during the event.

Uptown Tailgate Farmers Market – The farmers market continues at the Beckley Intermodal Gateway Plaza located beside Neville Street. Market hours are Mondays and Wednesdays from 3 – 5:15 pm, and Fridays from 10 am – 1 pm. If you have extra produce that you would like to sell at the market, contact the WVU Extension Office at 304-255-9321 for set-up details. The market will celebrate National Farmers Market Week – August 6 – 11 – by offering free vendor set-up and registering customers for prize drawings. Market vendors accept senior coupons.

The Beckley Art Center’s Family Art Fest will be held August 12 at Word Park from 3-6 pm offering art activities.

Taste of Beckley – As one of several events planned for the Appalachian Festival, Taste of Beckley will be featured on Saturday, August 26 from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. in downtown Beckley. The festive block party will offer a variety of food, entertainment & fun for all. Restaurants, organizations and event vendors are invited to set up booths along Main, Heber & Neville Streets selling their specialties to the community. Vendors sell items on their own, so tickets are not required. Interested vendors need to register with Beckley Events by August 10; call 304-256-1776 or visit the City’s website to download a form. Vendors must follow Health Department rules and have a food handlers’ card. A panel of celebrity judges and the public will vote for their favorites. If judged as the best in any of the categories, the entry will receive a certificate to display. Celebrity judges will vote for individual categories including best appetizer, entree’, sandwich, dessert, and most attractive booth. The public can vote for the Peoples’ Choice Booth.
Entertainment will feature the New River Jazz Band performing at 5:30 p.m. on Main Street., Randy Gilkey on Neville Street at 6:00 pm, and the Long Point String Band at 7:00 p.m. near the intersection of Fayette & Main Streets. A Kids Zone area will be offered by Faith Community Church. The annual Oreo stacking contest by Southern Communications will also take place between 6:30 & 7:00 pm.

Upcoming events: Beckley Events’ committee is accepting applications for booth spaces and parade entries during the Kids Classic Festival Street Fair on September 9. The committee will also accept registrations for Chili Night between August 7 and September 14. Up to 50 chili vendors may register, but only 20 non-chili vendors will be accepted (10 non-chili food vendors and 10 non-food vendors). More chili vendors are needed this year, so any business or organization wanting a booth space should plan to bring chili. Chili Night will be held on October 7 from 5-8 pm. Contact Beckley Events at 304-256-1776 or visit the City’s website site (www.beckley.org) or “Beckley Events” on Facebook for more event details.
