Appalachian Coal Town Christmas kicks off

BECKLEY (WOAY)- Friday marks the grand opening of the Appalachian Coal Town Christmas at the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine.

Dozens lined up Friday to get in on all the Christmas fun. Many enjoyed the underground mine tour, roasting marshmallows and checking out the gift shops and ornament work shop. There are also plenty of vendors setting up shop.

The coal town Christmas is open this weekend and next weekend from 5 to 9 pm. It’s 12 dollars for adults and just six dollars for children.

“It’s good for people to come out here and share and make a memory,” Animaland Adventure owner Mark Hurt said. “They may have a loved one who lives in, let’s say, Tennessee or somewhere. They can make a Christmas video and send it to them. They can then open it up for their Christmas present.”

“The main thing is always the underground tour, everybody loves that heritage,” Beckley Director of Parks and Recreation Leslie Baker said. “That’s part of what we do here at the Exhibition Coal Mine. It’s really unique to get in there and go underground. People love that.”

Our own Dylan Fearon took the underground mine tour and you’ll be able to catch that next week as part of his One Tank Trip!
