West Virginia (WOAY)—The West Virginia American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) launched an online tool allowing students and parents to report instructors’ attempts to teach religious ideology as science.
The system was created in response to the state legislature passing SB 280.
The bill initially permitted the teaching of intelligent design creationism in public schools.
However, following public backlash, the legislature amended the bill to allow instructors to answer questions about scientific theories on the origin of life.
The ACLU is concerned teachers will use the legislation to assert their religious views as science.
The organization intends to use the tool to monitor the situation and has a member of the legal team available to review complaints.
