A Man Wanted In Connection To Bluefield Police Officer’s Death Is Arrested

HUNTINGTON, WV (WOAY) – The Cabell County Sheriff’s Department arrested a man that was wanted by Bluefield Police.

Joseph William Smith, 24, was scheduled for his arraignment by phone on Tuesday, May 29th, but he didn’t show up. Deputies arrested him shortly before 7 pm Wednesday, May 30th, on Highlawn Ave.  A candlelight vigil was taking place in Bluefield on the one-year anniversary, which just happened to be the same time Smith was arrested.

Smith is charged in connection with the death of Bluefield Officer Aaron Cook back on May 30, 2017.

Smith had been released on bond for drug treatment.

A bench warrant was issued for his arrest.

Smith is being held in the Western Regional Jail under no bond.
