PSC warns consumers of phone scam

West Virginia (WOAY)- The West Virginia Public Service Commission is warning the public about a scam to use the PSC’s information to illegally obtain utility customer financial records.

The Commission received a complaint from a woman in Boone County, reporting her financial information was improperly obtained by a telephone caller who identified himself as a PSC employee.

He offered her a PSC program that would provide her with $250 a month for six months to reduce her utility bills.

In response, the caller asked for her debit card number and bank account, which she provided.

The call was a scam, and the caller did not work for the Commission.

PSC Chairman Charlotte R. Lane assures customers that Public Service Commission employees do not contact utility customers to advise them of utility relief programs or ask for financial and banking information.

Anyone receiving a call like this should hang up immediately and contact your local law enforcement agency.
