BACKGROUND:
On Nov. 3, 1947, the WVANG was founded at Kanawha Airport by then Lt. Col. James Kemp McLaughlin. During World War II, McLaughlin flew the B-17 in the 92nd Heavy Bombardment Group of the Eight Air Force which was responsible for some of the most important bombing missions and aerial battles in history. His actions during WWII were instrumental in helping deter the Germans from developing an atomic bomb as well as helping to destroy 70 percent of the German ball-bearing production facilities in Schweinfurt through air raids.

McLaughlin served as founder and commander of the West Virginia Air National Guard and went on to serve as commander of what is known today as the 130th Airlift Wing.

In 2014, the base was designated as McLaughlin Air National Guard Base, named in honor of its founder and first commander, Brig. Gen. James Kemp McLaughlin.
