BECKLEY - Mayor O'Brien tackled the city's finances at Tuesday night's council meeting. Common Council approved budget cuts to get the city out of the red.
O'Brien asked all department heads to cut their budgets by ten percent, and also to put a freeze on hiring for now. Mayor O'Brien says the cuts will be as small as managing day-to-day office supplies to cell phone usage.
"I need those two things to happen so we can get our arms around this bugetary process. There's just a bit of red ink and that is not in my vocabulary. We're going to make sure we get this budget properly done, so those two things have to happen," Beckley Mayor Bill O'Brien.
O'Brien added wages and benefits will not be cut.
