Five people plead not guilty to alleged kidnapping, robbery

FAYETTEVILLE - Nearly 40 people were arraigned in Fayette County Circuit Court on Friday morning for Judge Paul Blake's grand jury session, including five people linked to an alleged kidnapping and robbery.

Kenneth Essex, 27, Lesa Lewis, 20, Devin Logan, 19, Andrew Thompkins and Cathy Williams are all charged with conspiracy to commit a felony, kidnapping and robbery in the first degree. They all pleaded not guilty. Their jury trials are scheduled for April 15 at 9 a.m.

The incident happened the night of June 8, 2013, according to Smithers Police. The five suspects are accused of being involved in luring a man to a home, making him with withdraw money from his bank account, taking his personal belongings (including his vehicle) and throwing him in a river. Police said one of the suspects later came to police and gave his confession, which led to the arrests.

Essex is in Southern Regional Jail on $100,000 bond. Lewis is in Southern Regional Jail on $50,000 bond.

Logan, Thompkins and Williams were released upon posting bond.
