Man arrested on child porn charges

Local - 1/23/2014 5:50 PM
PRINCETON - A teenager was arrested in Mercer County on child pornography charges.

Joshua Poff, 18, of Bluefield, was charged with 148 counts of receiving and possessing material visually portraying a minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct.

Sheriff Don Meadows said Detective Corporal Steven A. Sommers with the Sheriff's Department and an investigator with the West Virginia Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force executed a search warrant at his parents' residence on January 10, where authorities seized computers and other electronics that belonged to Poff. Meadows said Poff admitted that he possessed, downloaded, and received child pornography. He was released pending further investigation, then arrested and arraigned Thursday on the 148 counts.

Sommers said Poff is the youngest perpetrator that he has come across to perform these types of crimes. "You cannot stereotype these crimes to individuals - the rich, the poor, the middle class, the young, the middle aged or old," he explained. "These types of crimes are perpetrated by everybody and anybody within those parameters."

Poff waived his right to a preliminary hearing during his arraignment, but Sommers said Poff may be convinced to do otherwise after he obtains legal counsel. Poff is in Southern Regional Jail on $50,000 cash or surety bond.
