BECKLEY - A group of students spent their day off from classes being productive and giving back to the community.
Students from New River Technical College helped out at Burlington Family Services in Beckley in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Organizers said that because the students didn't have class, they chose to spend the day painting a few rooms. People involved from the college said they do an event similar to this one every year as a special way to remember ‘the King’. The work started at 8:30 AM and the volunteers worked hard throughout the afternoon to paint rooms that the residents use as recreational rooms. Employees at the center said the new look will make this space even more enjoyable. Team Coordinator Emma Buchanan said, “they come to these rooms to work out, to watch movies and in one of our cottages we have a music room so these rooms are kind of their little getaway on campus when they can't get off campus. So they're going to be really excited to see the changes.”
Employees said they appreciate the work that New River Technical College has done, and look forward to seeing how the residents take to the new improvements.
