GHENT – A Raleigh County resort is dealing with a major influx of skiers this holiday weekend.

Winterplace Ski Resort offers more than 90 acres of trails and slopes with nine lifts to get skiers and snowboarders up as high as 3,600 feet.

Officials say they are seeing nearly twice as many patrons than an ordinary weekend due to the nice weather and the holiday weekend.

January is National Ski Safety month, so Winterplace says they are doubling-up on staff and tightening up security for the rush.

Winterplace Marketing Director, Lauren Snyder says the three-day weekend is big for business.

“Because it is a busy time, it's something we look forward to, we have a lot of people from the south that come in and even from around the area.”

Champion Baptist Church was on the slopes all weekend, and a group of girls say they love spending time in the mountains, tubing and skiing.

“All my friends are skiing today but I usually ski, so today I’ve been trying snowboarding,” says Josh Mills of Louisa, Ky., “It's a little rough starting but you get the hang of it.”
