BECKLEY – A Raleigh County church is celebrating the birth of an American icon, and pioneer of the civil rights movement.
Saint Paul Baptist Temple in Beckley welcomed residents to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Dr. King is noted for his non-violent civil rights demonstrations in the 1960's and is known for his famous “I Have A Dream” speech.
Those in attendance Saturday afternoon give thanks to Dr. King and the sacrifices he made, and strive to carry on his message every day.
“In 1968 when Dr. King was killed, I was in Vietnam fighting the war,” says Rev. James Cox of the First Baptist Church in Beckley.
“God has blessed me that I’m able to go and carry on the dream that Dr. King had, and it is my job to serve to try to bring the community together... Black, white, rich, poor.”
Rev. Cox says Dr. King is a hero and deserves every bit of praise given at the service.
