UPDATE - Police have identified the student athlete found dead Wednesday on the University of Charleston's Beckley campus.
Det. Morgan Bragg said Sheila Hopkins, 19, of Bluefield, was found unresponsive inside her room at Hogan Hall. Bragg said Hopkins was a freshman at U.C. According to the school's website, she was on the basketball team.
BECKLEY - A university student-athlete was found dead on Wednesday on a campus in Raleigh County.
Beckley Police said they responded to reports of an unresponsive student at the Beckley Campus of the University of Charleston. After EMS arrived on-scene, they confirmed that a female student had died. Officials said she was between the ages of 19 and 22 and was a basketball player for the school. The body has been sent to a medical examiner to conduct a autopsy and determine the cause of death. Officials said, at this point, her death does not seem suspicious in nature.
Detective Morgan Bragg of the Beckley Police Dept. said, "nothing at the scene indicated that there would be anything suspicious of but it is still a matter that we are looking into...reviewing surveillance footage and other matters."
No further details about the student are being released until officials are able to notify the victim's family.
