BLUEFIELD, Va. – Bluefield College head cross country coach Travis Roberts has announced his first commitment of the season, as Matthew Bowman, a senior from Sullivan Central High School (Blountville, Tenn.), has signed to join the BC cross country program. Bowman will enroll at Bluefield for the fall semester and is planning on majoring in exercise and sport science.
“Matthew is going to be a great asset to the cross country team at Bluefield College,” stated Roberts upon Bowman’s signing. “I believe that he has potential not only to be a competitive runner, but to be a model student-athlete. I look forward to helping him and our student-athletes reach their full potential.”
Bowman has run cross country since middle school and also competed in track for three years during his high school career. He’s clocked a 5k time of 19:26 as well as a 5:13 mile. In track he’s registered a 59-second 400-meter time and posted a 2:21 time in 800-meters. In 2012, Bowman was named most improved runner at his school.
Academically, Bowman is in both the Science and Foreign Language Honors Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Future Business Leaders of America.
Aside from running, the Kingsport, Tenn., native enjoys swimming, mountain biking, hiking, skiing and reading.
"It has been a pleasure getting to know Matthew and his parents. They are a great family! We're honored to have Matthew join the cross country family here at Bluefield College."
