BECKLEY - Officials for the American Red Cross are encouraging folks to give blood this winter.

Officials said every year around this time, the weather shuts down several blood drives but the demand never ceases. Every two seconds, someone in the country needs blood product.

Officials depend on schools to deliver 25 percent of the units of blood they collect, so when snow days cancel drives, it can affect blood totals. "When it snows, it just makes it more important on the days that the weather is nicer that you come in," said Donor Recruitment Representative Scott Hill. "If you have time, make sure you make your winter appointment and come in and see us here at the American Red Cross."
