BLUEFIELD - A scholastic competition in Mercer County determined 2 students to move on to the next round.

Bluefield State College hosted the Mercer County Spelling Bee on Thursday for elementary and middle school age students. 36 students began spelling, but only 2 will be moving on to the Regional Competition. Organizers said the ultimate goal is to reach the National Bee in Washington D.C. held in May. The winner was Nisa Rana, an 8th grader from Princeton Middle School, and the runner up was Miranda Cales; fifth grader from Sun Valley Elementary School. 15 year veteran of the event said all of the students impress her

"They've got butterflies, of course but I'm very impressed with how poised they are. We have a number of 4th graders and they seem to be speaking out, they're ready to go. And from 4th to 8th I'm impressed with what I see," said Rebecca Broyles.

This week's winners will represent Mercer County at the Regional Spelling Bee in Charleston on March 22nd.
