Power outages, record low temperatures following Tuesday's cold snap

CHARLESTON - Thousands of homes and businesses across the mountain state temporarily lost power amid a record cold snap.

FirstEnergy reported 5,400 customers in West Virginia were without electricity at midday. Appalachian Power said about 3,000 customers lost service in southern West Virginia. 

Among the cities reporting record lows Tuesday morning were Wheeling at minus 10 degrees and Morgantown at minus 7 degrees. All 55 county public school systems cancelled classes Tuesday.
