BECKLEY - A Raleigh Co. gym opened its doors for people looking to include a healthy lifestyle in their New Years plans.

Sunday afternoon the YMCA of Beckley held its annual Open House from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. And whatever gets your adrenaline pumping, the YMCA of Southern West Virginia has you covered... At least that's what officials hope.

Jay Rist, CEO at the YMCA, says many of the people at the Open House were there to start their resolutions.

“With the New Year comes New Years resolutions, and that's why many people are here today.”

Ron and Shannon Neely joined the Y during their visit, “We decided we wanted to start the New Year off by trying to get in better shape.”

Guests toured the facilities, including the wellness center with all the weights and cardio equipment, and learned how to get into a workout groove.

Marie Lewis was visiting, and checking out all the Y has to offer and what she might try out, “Probably use the gym, treadmill, and those kinds of things that you can’t do outside this time of year.”

Despite the overload of physical fitness, YMCA directors say the focus is less about a workout, and more about making healthy lifestyle choices.

“What we're trying to do here is just connect families with one another and connect people to common interests like working out,” Rist says, “Improving their health and well-being.”
