CHARLESTON - The mountain state was one of two states to lose population in the past year, according to new census estimates.

The estimates released by the Census Bureau put the state's population as of July 1, 2013 at 1,854,304. That number is down nearly 2,400 from last year's estimate.

Maine was the only other state to record a decrease in population. Maine and Rhode Island are the only states whose most recent population estimates are lower than the 2010 census count.

Only 16 of West Virginia's 55 counties gained population since the 2010 census, according to the 2012 county-level estimates.
