FAYETTEVILLE - Local police departments gathered this evening to take Fayette County kids shopping.

The 'Shop With a Cop' event took place on Sunday night at the Walmart in Fayetteville. Each child received about $100 to shop for clothes and toys; which will be their Christmas gifts. 109 kids were treated to a pizza party with cookies and cupcakes, they got their pictures taken with Santa, and then hit the aisles to shop. The officials of Oak Hill and Fayetteville Police Departments said it's just as much of a thrill for them as it is for the kids.

"Well the officers, like myself; this kinda makes Christmas for us. It wouldn't be right, it wouldn't seem like Christmas if right before Christmas we couldn't take these kids out. Its the meaning of Christmas, helping out and giving back to the community. We get a lot of appreciation from the kids, from the parents and from the community that sees us here shopping; everybody's grateful for what we're doin'," said Chief Mike Whisman of the Oak Hill City PD.

Fayette County authorities collect all year long for this event and will continue to do it as long as they can.
