BECKLEY - Beckley Elementary students donated boxes of canned food to local food pantries.
Information and Referral Specialist Teresa Kelly with the United Way of Southern West Virginia picked up the food Tuesday to distribute to area pantries. Students had been collecting food since around Thanksgiving.
Kelly said the donation will really help the pantries, which have been depleted since Hurricane Sandy last year. “They've never fully recovered and there is a great need in southern West Virginia for food,” she explained. “This will be a great step in helping to fill some of those needs.”
“It feels good helping other people,” explained fourth grader Taylor McDaniel.
Students also contributed to Change for Paws, a fundraiser for the Humane Society of Raleigh County. They raised more than $300, according to school officials.
