GLEN JEAN - The National Park Service will close a spring in Fayette County after mandatory testing indicated it was not suitable for drinking water.
The Ajax Spring located off of Fayette Station Road will be closed, according to Robin Snyder, chief of interpretation and visitor services for the New River Gorge National River.
Snyder said recent testing showed Ajax Spring does not meet the minimum requirements for drinking water. The lab results showed high levels of arsenic and mercury, as well as the presence of coliform bacteria.
Even though the spring is posted as a non-potable water source, there was concern that residents use the spring water for household use, so the N.P.S. Health Inspector recommended closing the spring.
