Deserving children in McDowell County 'Shop with a Cop'

WELCH - Law enforcement in McDowell County bought gifts for deserving children Wednesday night in the spirit of Christmas, as part of "Shop with a Cop."

Agencies including the Sheriff's Department and the Welch Police Department took between 70 and 80 kids to the Walmart in Kimball. Each child received $150 to spend on toys and clothes.

Deputy Ryan Freeman said many of those children would not have any Christmas presents if it were not for Shop with a Cop. "I think it shows them that people do care - the community does care about them,” he said. “As cops, they look up to us as role models so it shows that we're really interested in their lives."

Donations from area businesses helped make "Shop with a Cop" possible, according to Freeman.
