Iaeger Elementary School deemed unsafe

UPDATE: Students at Iaeger Elementary school will head back to school this Thursday, but not at their school.

The school was shut down after a large part of the parking lot fell into the Tug River last week. School officials tell us students won't be heading back to their old school but instead students have been divided up. Officials have decided to send pre-k through first grade students to Bradshaw Elementary and second through fifth graders to River View High School.

A bus schedule has not been released and days missed will not have to be made up at the end of the year.

UPDATE: WELCH - A McDowell county school was closed after a section of the parking lot slid into the nearby Tug River.

County Schools Superintendent Nelson Spencer met with Iaeger Elementary's staff in Welch on Wednesday to talk about a temporary plan. They decided to send pre-K through first grade students to Bradshaw Elementary and second through fifth graders to River View High School. They also discussed the topic of bus transportation and a schedule will be finalized in the near future, according to Spencer.

A 100-foot by 40-foot section of the parking area slid into the river Saturday morning and the school board determined that the school is unsafe.

Nelson said the elementary students going to River View will be segregated from the high school students. “We've moved them away from the high school students as much as possible,” he said. Even though interactions will be limited, Nelson believes the students will get along. “I would bet that the high school students would actually protect the elementary [students] more than what we're giving them credit for,” he said.

Classes are canceled for the remainder of the week.  About 350 students attend the school and they are expected to resume classes sometime next week at the other facilities. Spencer said a letter will be sent to parents explaining the relocation plan.

Construction for a new elementary school has been underway, according to Spencer. Officials began moving desks and other materials Wednesday from the former elementary school.
