Beckley Fire Department prepares for winter weather

BECKLEY - The Beckley Fire Department began bringing wintertime protocols into effect on Friday.

Chief Billie Trump explained that before any snowstorm, firefighters inspect the tire chains for the trucks and keep them handy. They bring torches and heating materials in case hydrants or other items need to be heated up. Everyone also has a set of backup bunker gear.

Because of these protocols, Trump said his team is prepared for the inclement weather. “When the tones go off, we have to respond - no matter if the roads are slick, no matter if the conditions are bad, no matter if there is ice everywhere,” he explained. “What we really try to do is respond in a manner that is safe and effective.”

Trump recommended avoiding driving in the snow this weekend unless you have somewhere you need to be.
