WELCH - McDowell County's Public schools received more than $204,000 to improve exercise programs for students.
The Highmark Foundation Grant came after a six-month planning grant allowed West Virginia University's College of Physical Activity and Sports Sciences along with others to work with the county Board of Education to develop a plan aimed at increasing physical activity in 11 schools. WVU said the money provided improved equipment and more resources for classroom teachers. It also financed before and after school physical activity programs and established a system for fitness testing and reporting.
