BECKLEY - The American Cancer Society is encouraging smokers today to stop smoking, in a day they call the Great American Smokeout.
Today the society wants smokers to plan to quit permanently, or even try to quit smoking for one day. According to the American Cancer Society, tobacco use remains the single largest cause of preventable disease and premature death in the United States.
"You just need to take the right steps and it does cause cancer and I've actually had that step before and I'm trying to quit actually as we speak," said James Thornton.
"I've been smoking since I was about 14 and I'm 42 now. It's too hard to quit for me. I've been smoking for so long, and I couldn't quit," said Patricia Thornton.
43.8 million Americans still smoke cigarettes today according to the American Cancer Society.
