HARTS RUN - A Greenbrier County church is still standing Wednesday afternoon after five volunteer departments work to extinguish a fire in its log cabin.

White Sulphur Springs, Lewisburg and three Virginia volunteer fire departments responded to Emmanuel Community Church on Route 60 in Harts Run after 9:30 a.m. Officials said the fire spread unusually fast due to the logs, wood and timber used to construct the building, but felt lucky to have four other departments assist them.

"That really did help us," Assistant Chief James Lewis said. "If it hadn't been for the support from our neighboring departments, we might have lost that church today."

James E. Martin lives just feet away from it.

"Flames were up that high -- as high as that power line pole -- and the smoke was just billowing," Martin told WOAY. "The smoke was at times blanking out the building. It was heavy."

The fire department believes Emmanuel Community Church will continue their service Sunday as planned.
