BECKLEY - It may not be winter yet, but Beckley officials believe cooler weather is the perfect time to talk preparedness.
Kevin Taylor and the Beckley Emergency Preparedness team hosted a safety seminar to talk about available shelters, pet safety and winterizing your home in the coming weeks.
"Weather is something we cannot prevent, but we can be prepared for it, and even though we've been through these each and every year, preparedness is still an issue," Taylor told WOAY.
Taylor said common sense approaches such as evacuation plans and emergency kits are sometimes overlooked by the general public. With the help of guests like the National Weather Service, he hopes to collectively prepare the area for the arriving conditions.
"Anything that we all do collectively as far as preparedness goes, and winter weather is definitely one of the top items on that list," said Brian Bell, who represented the Beckley-Raleigh County Health Department. "So if everybody is on the same page and hearing information from good, credible sources together, then that definitely helps."
A representative with the NWS also shared information about EDD, which is a multi-layered mapping system that offers updated information about your geogrpahic location online.
