BECKLEY - A fundraiser Thursday night is raising money for an expensive treatment for a local multiple sclerosis patient.

McBee's Irish Pub in Beckley is hosting an adult costume party to benefit Leslee Pannell, 28, a mother who is hoping to have a stem cell transplant that could put her in remission. Pannell said the transplant would cost $150,000 without insurance, but even with insurance she would have very high co-pays.

Pannell wants to raise not only money, but also awareness. “I hope that I can tell people that there is hope - that you don't have to listen to just what your doctors say,” she said. “That you can be your own advocate and you can go out in the community and they will back you… You can do anything that you want to do.”

4Raleigh, a local business, is organizing the benefit. It runs from 8 p.m. until closing. Donations will be accepted and there is no cover charge.
