BECKLEY - A coal mining job fair Wednesday in Beckley attracted about 125 applicants.
Affinity Coal Company held the fair all day at Tamarack. Officials said they have some positions available and applications are valid for three months.
Curtis Yarbrough of Oceana, who worked in the coal mines before being laid off, said the industry is not booming anymore. "Unemployment is going through the roof," he said. "There are just so many miners in this state that are qualified for these jobs and there's not enough jobs for everybody."
Yarbrough said he hopes to be hired soon so he can support his family.
Affinity Coal Company is holding another job fair at Tamarack from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday.
