BECKLEY - More than 30
locals participated in a virtual training exercise in Beckley to prepare for
officials and representatives from several community agencies took part in a
Virtual Tabletop Exercise conducted by FEMA and the Emergency Management Institute.
Video conferences brought together participants from sites across the nation to
discuss a winter storm scenario, from preparedness efforts to recovery.
Director of Beckley
Emergency Services Kevin Taylor said the community can never be too prepared
for disastrous weather situations. "Weather is something we can't do
anything about, but we can be as prepared as we can be and it takes a whole
community to do that,” he said. Taylor explained the Virtual Tabletop Exercise
is “[J]ust a way for us to exchange ideas and talk about it before the event
ever takes place” so the community can be “more ready and resilient.”
Several sites in the federal,
state and local levels participated in the exercise, which took about four
hours to complete.
