WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Jay Rockefeller said his longtime chief of staff will leave in December.

Rockefeller made the announcement about the upcoming departure of Kerry A. Ates Monday.  Ates will become the vice president and chief of staff at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore in January.

Rockefeller said deputy staff director James Reid will take Ates' place for the remainder of his term.  He announced back in January that he would not seek a sixth term in 2014.
