LEWISBURG - A performing arts and movie theatre in Lewisburg is turning to an online funding platform to raise money for upgrades.

The owners of the Lewis Theatre have been trying to raise "39 K’s in 39 days" through Kickstarter. The money will go toward the upgrade to digital projection. Managers said they have no other alternative but to go digital, since 33 millimeter film will not be available for much longer.

The theatre has until November 3 at 11:04 a.m. to raise $39,000. Devin Preston, one of the managers, said he is optimistic they will reach their goal. “We are a very close-knit community and I am proud and happy that it is coming to fruition,” Preston explained.

Larry Levine, one of the owners, is impressed by the donors thus far. “The community has been very generous,” said Levine. “We've gotten contributions from California to Australia, the northeast, Florida...[and] the majority of our contributions… have been in West Virginia.”

Kickstarter is an all-or-nothing fundraising platform. Preston said if they cannot raise the money, they may need to close for a month or two to figure out what their next steps would be.
