FAYETTEVILLE - The Fayette County Sheriff's Department is cracking down on traffic violations in school zones.
It's part of National School Bus Safety Week starting Monday October 21, until October 25. Deputies from the Fayette County Sheriff's Department will be aggressively patrolling school zones, especially in rural areas like Midland Trail High School. Being able to add deputies to areas was made possible by a grant from the Governors Highway Safety Committee to pay overtime to the deputies.
"To be honest we hope we don't issue a single citation as part of this," said Capt. Jim Sizemore with the Sheriff's Department. "We want to get the word out to the public and we're hoping by spreading the word we're going to be doing this and they see our cruisers and realize it's important to slow down in a school zone and not get in a hurry to pass a school bus."
Capt. Sizemore also said it's all in part to keep our children safe.
