Lipitor lawsuits moved to federal court

BLUEFIELD - Three dozen lawsuits filed against the maker of Lipitor in McDowell County are moved to federal court.

The lawsuits alleged that the cholesterol drug isn't safe and claimed that taking Lipitor was associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, blindness, and other ailments.  The cases were filed in September in McDowell County Circuit Court, but were moved to U.S. District Court in Bluefield last week. Some cases involved multiple plaintiffs.

The drug's maker, Pfizer Inc., denied the allegations in a response filed last week.  The company said the drug had been approved by the Food and Drug Administration and that the risks associated with using Lipitor, if any, are outweighed by it's utility.
