CHARLESTON - More than 56,000 Amtrak passengers began or ended their trips in West Virginia for the fiscal year ending September 30.

That was up 2% from the previous federal budget year.  Huntington was the busiest Amtrak station in the state and Charleston's came in second.  Hinton's station was fourth with 8.897 passengers.  The number of passengers that used the station in Thurmond more than doubled during that period from 264 passengers to 563.

Nationwide, the passenger rail service said that it carried a record 31.6 million passengers.
