COLUMBIA, Ky. – Bluefield College goalkeeper Jefferson Watson has been named the Mid-South Conference Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, announced by the conference on Monday. The award covers games played between Oct. 7-Oct. 13.
The award is the first for Watson in the Mid-South Conference, while he earned the same weekly honor during the 2011 season when the Rams were members of the Appalachian Athletic Conference.
The senior keeper stopped all 11 shots faced this week as the Bluefield recorded wins over Montreat College and conference opponent St. Catharine.
Against Montreat, the Woodbridge, Va., native denied four Cavalier shot attempts on goal en route to his second shutout of the season with the 1-0 win.
Watson then played 79 minutes against the visiting Patriots. He stopped seven shots during his play in regulation and saved St. Catharine’s one shot on goal during overtime as the Rams went on to win 3-2 in the extra period.
Watson ranks fourth in the conference with a 1.81 goals against average and is sixth with 47 saves.
He has not allowed a goal since the Rams’ Sept. 28 loss to Campbellsville, a stretch spanning four games and nearly 333 minutes.
The Rams, who improved to 8-6 this season behind the two wins this week, play next on Wednesday at Concord University. Game time is 4 p.m.
